Fakenham has had a market town since 1250. The can trace its history back to the times of a Saxon settlement in the 6th century. The Upper Market and the Market Square adjacent have been pedestrianised to give good shopping facilities. Every Thursday a market held in these areas and also at the Old Cattle Market.

On the other side of the road to the watermill is the Fakenham Museum of Gas and Local History. This is the only complete Gasworks remaining in England and Wales but it is non operational. See web site link.
